The development of the optimal breathing techniques before, during and after training or a match significantly improves the actual performance and recovery.
People new to sport can find it especially dificult to develop the right breathing techniques. Often the natural breathing is automatically improved. Through an active sport the muscles used, including muscles in the lungs and those used for breathing, become stronger.

When considering sport there are three periods when it is useful to consider the importance of effective breathing techniques:
  • Warming-up
  • Training or competing
  • Cooling-down
Warming-upScientific research shows clearly that for warming-up to be effective the average heartbeat rate should be between 60-70% of the maximum heart beat.

Queens University in New York has determined that just before the start of matches the heart beat increases significantly despite the fact that there is no additional demand for energy. This phenomenon is called psychological stress. The queues of particpants in front of toilet facilities ahead of major competitions is a sign of this phenomenon.

Cooling-downCooling-down is critical for a speedy recovery after a sports performance. Cooling down is the opposite to warming up in that after training or a competion the body needs to recover its normal balance: by not stopping abruptly but by slowly reducing the activities waste liquids can be effectively expelled from the muscles. This prevents tense, tired and stiff muscles.

This is of critical importance to a speedy recovery. In general, priority is still given to the stretching exercises and breathing control.Stretching in this context is more to do with relaxation exercises for overworked muscles rather than the stretching of muscles. During the exercises you should feel a light stretching of the muscles and it is important in cold weather to put on warm clothes in order to prevent cooling down too quickly.
Effective breathing and warming up
Because higher heart rhythm has a negative impact on performance it is crucial for any spors person to get a grip on his or her mental state.
afb_trainingOr to put it another way, a better performance can be achieved at similar heart beats and lactation level. A precondition is a continued use of chest breathing technique. A bettter bloodcirculation also ensures a fast and optimal disposal of waste substances from the muscles.
Better recovery after heavy excercise.
afb_coolingdownAfter heavy excercise (for instance a race with accelaration at the end) the level of activity should not be reduced abruptly to prevent too strong and sudden a reduction in bloodpressure.
This could lead to fainting. With well trained chest breathing technique the recovery period of muscles and organs is considerably reduced. Injuries incurred will then also recover more quickly.
